The trick the pros use
Here's something most generator shoppers never hear: you don't need a generator big enough to run everything at once, because everything never runs at once. Your AC cycles. Your water heater cycles. Your dryer runs an hour a day. Load management is the technology that takes advantage of this — it watches your generator's output and temporarily sheds lower-priority loads when demand spikes, then brings them back automatically.
How it works in practice
Say your generator is near capacity and the AC compressor kicks on — a huge momentary surge. Without load management, the generator overloads and trips. With it, the system instantly drops pre-selected loads (the electric water heater, the dryer, the pool pump) for the minute or two the surge lasts, then restores them. You never notice. The water heater doesn't care that it paused for 90 seconds; your comfort never changes.
What it saves you
This is the money part. Load management routinely lets a home run on a generator one or two sizes smaller than "everything at once" math would require — and each size step down saves thousands on the unit plus lower fuel burn for life. For many Charles County homes, the difference between a 26 kW and a 20 kW generator is load management. The modules themselves are inexpensive; the savings are not.
Retrofit and new installs
We design load management into new installations from the start — choosing which circuits get managed and setting priorities with you. We can also retrofit load management onto existing installations that are tripping under peak loads: if your generator groans when everything kicks on at once, managed loads may fix it for far less than a bigger generator. Our sizing consultation always evaluates whether load management fits your home.
